What is Snap Scene and why does it work?

Very young children with speech and learning disabilities can learn language, communication, and emerging literacy skills.  But timing is everything!  We all know that early intervention is the key to support development and learning to the greatest extent possible for children at risk for delays. Without access to language and literacy during key developmental periods, nonverbal children may experience delays in communication, reading, and social skills which can have a negative impact on the entire education process.

These are young children who do not have a reliable symbol system and depend heavily on the adults around them to interpret their communicative attempts.  They are beginning to learn how communication works (e.g., initiating, learning vocabulary, turn-taking, joint attention, etc.) and may also demonstrate one or more of the following characteristics:

  • Do not speak
  • May be slower in learning to talk
  • May speak but are difficult to understand
  • Are at risk for communication challenges

There is a solution!  Snap Scene is an augmentative communication solution designed specifically for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and others at the beginning stages of learning communication.

We know that Snap Scene works because there is evidence to prove it!  The design is based on the research done by Dr. Janice Light and Dr. Kathryn Drager.  They found that the approach used in Snap Scene resulted in significant gains in language and communication skills including:

  • initiating and maintaining social interactions.
  • sharing information and expression of wants and needs.
  • using of new words and concepts including colors, numbers and letter sounds.
  • combining words and concepts to express more complex ideas.
