New in Compass 2.6

With the Compass 2.6 update, we are happy to announce many new improvements to scanning and major performance and speed improvements to the Core First, All Access, and Master Page pagesets.

In addition, some notable new features have been added that include: 

• Touchscreen as a Switch for All Platforms
• Public/Private Audio Cues Added for I-Series Devices

Current Compass users can update to Compass 2.6, at no charge, through your Compass software by going to Help, Check for Update, and Get Update - free of charge!

Topics

Use Topics for the every day conversations we have about the things that are important to us - activities, what's for dinner or our families. Each Topic comes with a complete array of pre-loaded messages and visual supports so you can quickly communicate in your daily activities.

QuickFires

QuickFires are little words you can use in every Topic and conversation. You can use them to ask and answer questions, get attention, and manage conversations successfully.

QuickPhrases

QuickPhrases are a fast and easy way to comment in social situations. Use them to greet others, interact socially, share personal feelings, ask questions, and even repair communication breakdowns.

Core

Core is made up of single words to use when you want to say something that hasn't already been stored within Tobii Dynavox Compass. Core systematically introduces an appropriate number of words and increases as your skills increase. Pair up Core with Word Lists and the Keyboard to say anything! In addition, Tobii Dynavox helps you support your learning and use of Core with lesson plans, books, and activities… All found on myTobiiDynavox!

Word Lists

In each Topic, there are related Word Lists. Use them to further and deepen your daily conversations and customize them by adding and deleting.

Whiteboard

Using a whiteboard drawing app is a great way to involve gesturing in the communication process.

The Whiteboard is like a blank piece of paper that you write or draw on with your finger. Use it to write short messages, letters, or draw pictures to show to your communication partner or for them to show you. Save your drawing or message to use in a future conversation

Positive Behavioral Supports

Positive Behavior Supports include the same visual strategies you've grown accustomed to using. Samples of easily customizable Visual Rule Scripts, First-Then Charts, Contingency Maps, Mini-Schedules, Social Narratives, and Visual Timers are available right within each Topic page!

Keyboard

Use the Keyboard to communicate with a single letter or a full word. Choose the Keyboard layout that works best for you, with a variety of alphabetical or QWERTY formats available.

Many also feature Word Prediction that will guess the words you might be typing based on the letters you enter, enhancing your rate of communication even more!

Rating Scales

Rating scales can be used to quickly share with your communication partner your opinion ("Great-OK-Terrible") or how you are feeling via a pain scale.

Scripts

Scripts are a series of messages that appear in a specific order to help you practice, and then participate, in the conversations that are important to you. Scripts can be used to tell stories, share information, or start a friendly exchange.

Photo Album

Sharing photographs is a great way to engage others in conversation, tell stories, share what's going on it your life and provide information. Photo Albums are a convenient way to do this. Photo album creator allows you to place up to 4 captions below any series of pictures. It's a simple and effective way to share personal information or to create a memory book to support memory and orientation activities.

Dashboard

The Dashboard offers you a way to adjust settings in your Compass software, and quick access to additional control tools. The Dashboard tool is located on the communication toolbar. From the Dashboard you can quickly adjust access method, IR set up and access, volume setting, communication level and layout, as well as access to back up and restore menu. Use the Dashboard to customize your Tobii Dynavox solution for your specific needs and to access additional tools for greater communication independence.

Tobii Dynavox solutions offer a variety of Pagesets to provide a best-fit for your unique strengths and needs as you grow, learn and reach for your goals. Within your Compass Software, each Pageset includes fast and powerful editing tools that make it easy to personalize your communications solution even further.

Core First

Core First® is Tobii Dynavox’s own pageset centered around core words. Presented in a variety of layouts to facilitate development and meet access needs, Core First has two key options: the Fitzgerald Key and Keyboard Core. The Fitzgerald Key has two options for core growth – start with a small number of buttons and grow, or start with a complete set of buttons and fill in. The Keyboard Core presents core words that are generated through a keyboard approach.

NavBar

The NavBar Pageset allows you to access any Topic without switching between pages; simply swipe through your list of topics always visible on your screen. The communication tools and array of topics remain accessible from any Topic for additional use. The NavBar Pageset can utilize either large visual scenes or a more traditional grid of messages for each topic and can be customized for all ages and ability levels.

Stroke & Brain Injury

The Stroke & Brain Injury Persona is a comprehensive communication Pageset designed to address the unique language needs of individuals with Aphasia. Designed through extensive research, field-testing, and customer insight, it provides an unmatched solution for those who have had a stroke, brain injury, or other condition resulting in Aphasia. The Stroke & Brain Injury Persona uses a NavBar layout.

All Access

This one-of-a-kind Pageset supports the needs of individuals who use alternative access methods, like scanning or a head mouse. Features include a comprehensive vocabulary (adjusted based on determined ability), easy storage of messages on a page, and efficient retrieval and editing of messages previously spoken. Individuals who can successfully touch buttons on a screen may also find the organization of this Pageset useful.

Navigator

Designed for those with ALS in mind, the Navigator Pageset supports the needs of individuals who are literate and have the ability to use a variety of access methods, including a keyboard, scanning, or a head mouse. To support efficient and effective communication, the Navigator Pageset provides a structure to store topic-specific messages, to efficiently access and edit previously spoken messages, and to communicate preprogrammed phrases that can be used in many settings. This Pageset uses a series of levels to introduce new communication tools and other features in a way that promotes easier learning and more successful use.

Master Page

The Master Page Pageset features a consistent home (i.e., the Master Page) with links to all of your Topics and communication tools. After selecting a Topic and messages, simply select a “back” button to return to the Master Page. Like the NavBar Pageset, the Master Page Pageset can utilize either large visual scenes or a more traditional grid of messages for each topic. The Master Page Pageset can be customized for all ages and ability levels and is appropriate for keyguard users.

Text-based

The Text-based Pageset offers communication pages with single words and complete messages organized as Topics, QuickFires, Keyboards, and other Communication Tools. The Text-based Pageset is designed for literate teenagers and adults.

WordPower

WordPower is a well-known, clinician-developed core word strategy that allows you to combine single words into your own phrases and sentences. WordPower is flexible, so it can be used by both children and adults with different ability levels.

WordPower is not included with Perpetual Apps.

Gateway Pageset

Created by Dr. Joan Bruno, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, Gateway is comprised of single words that can be joined together to create longer messages. Gateway has evolved over the years to reflect a variety of developmental levels, types of communicators, and changes in technology.

PODD® Pageset

PODD, created by speech pathologist Gayle Porter, is a way of organizing whole word and symbol vocabulary to provide immersion and modeling as well as a means to express a range of messages in a variety of environments. There are PODD Pagesets to provide multiple options to suit the communication and language requirements of different individuals.

When a person’s speech and understanding are impacted by an event such as stroke or brain injury, daily activities like making important decisions, being involved in work or hobbies, and spending time with loved ones are impacted too.

Stroke & Brain Injury Persona adds more communication tools for you to use. Scripts allow you to take your turn in routine back-and-forth conversations. They may also prompt you to take your turn with your natural speech. Whiteboards allow you, or your communication partner, to write or draw and save the image for use again at a later time. Rating Scales, including a pain scale, help you communicate with medical professionals and your caregivers.
